2008 People Powered Ride a Great Success

Goleta Valley Cycling Club put on a memorable 2008 People Powered Ride on Sunday, October 12, in Los Olivos. Over 200 participants enjoyed a stunning day with the expected winds never getting very strong. As always, the array of food was highly praised. Luckily, except for a rash of flats, road mishaps were at a minimum this year.

Participants chose from 3 rides: the Cabernet 100, the Merlot Metric (70), and the Chardonnay 30.

Each year the proceeds from the PPR are used to fund local, state, and national bicycle advocates and projects. This year's donations from your 2007 PPR registration fees totalled nearly $10,000 and went to Coalition for Sustainable Transportation, including Safe Routes to Schools, Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, BiciCentro Bike Kitchen, League of American Bicyclists, Rails to Trails, and others.

2008 Winners Announced!

    Santa Barbara Cyclists Win!

At our annual meeting, our club officers were brought back for another term, but the real winners are the cyclists who will benefit from Goleta Valley Cycling Club's good works. Many thousands of dollars were donated by the club, mostly to local bike advocacy groups, but also to state and national organizations.

The funds were generated by your entry fees to the People Powered Ride, enabling donations by individuals such as Bob McFarland and the Brooks Firestone family, and by club dues. The major recipients of this year's donations are the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, Santa Barbara Coalition for Sustainable Transportation, which sponsors the Safe Routes to School program, Bici Centro at La Casa de la Raza, and Santa Barbara County Traffic Solutions.

Join our rides for fun and fitness!

The club offers a variety of rides from monthly newcomer rides to tougher tours up the local hills. Check the calendar and come ride with us!
Although many of us wear colorful biker clothes and have road bikes, we are tourers, not racers. Our greatest passion, and perennial source of discussion, is safety on the roads -- how routes can be configured for better bike safety and how bikers can make wise riding choices to maximize safety.
While it is true that some GVCC members enjoy chasing down younger race kit-clad speedsters, club rides are cooperative, not competitive..
Non-members are always welcome to come meet club members and try our rides out. Check the calendar and join us.
